New Year!

Hello again,

The new year is upon us yet again. It seems to have gone very quickly this year.

This year has made me realise just how much I want to be a production artist. I have decided to stop messing around with lists and the odd challenge because ultimately it isn't getting me anywhere.  I am no longer going to waste time on images that have no purpose. I am going to be devoting the next 12 months to this instead...

I haven't managed to have a detailed look at this just yet, but from what I have seen, it looks to be the best book I have ever bought. This book has everything I need to make a start on the real way to draw and how to construct 3D objects from imagination.

I have already been practicing my line work, cubes and ellipses. These are things I thought I could do just fine and didn't need to continue practicing. I was sorely mistaken! Something as simple as drawing a straight line with a pencil actually challenged me. It has also dawned on me how long it's being since I have actually used a pencil and a sheet of paper. It was a little liberating to use them again.

I aim to slowly work my way though this book and practice each stage religiously. Hopefully as a result I will become much more competent with my technical ability and be able to focus more on the design than how to draw it. Between this, Feng Zhu's tutorials and Andrew Loomis I will be a production artist!

Onto 2014, the life changing year!

List Project and Self Portrait day!

Wow it's again been a while since I updated this blog. I seem to be slipping more and more with these things. I think it's because I now have my own place and there's always something to be doing. I have just had no time to draw never mind update this as well as all my sketchbooks and portfolio sites. As soon as my place is sorted I hope I can get back on track and start learning and growing again!

I feel that there has been no progression this year...

That been said, here are a couple of relatively new image. One is my entry for the self-portrait day and the other is another list image.

Here's this years portrait!

I really enjoyed doing this image. It's been around a year since I tackled a portrait and I do feel this is better than my last. I just had to do myself as a zombie because it was so close to Halloween and I had just watched World War Z for the first time. I'll have to try top this next year...

Now here's my list image "The Scout"

For this image I wanted to try and create an image like those that are found in "legend of the Cryptids" cards. I don't think I have done as well as a could have but I feel this is one of my best images to date. With this image I tried harder with the lighting and choosing focal points to detail rather than trying to detail all of it. I did enjoy this image quite a lot when I did it. Now when I look back on it I feel I can do better and it's making want to to do it .

Right I'm going to stop ranting now I leave for another 5 months. I'll see you there future me...

List Project Update

Well I think it's about time I bring this blog a little more up to date. I have recently completed 2 more images for my "List project". I havn't managed to work on this list that much, but hopefully I can work a little more on weekends. I have just got a new job and it frees up my whole weekends for painting! It's going to be AWESOME!

Anyway, here are #3 & #5

03 - Corpse

05 - Giant Elemental

Right well thats it for now. I have learnt a lot from both of these images and hopefully I can keep on learning with the next...

Study time again!

I'm really starting to enjoy these life studies. This one took much longer than intended but it doesn't matter how long it takes. All that matters is that I leant something & enjoying the process.

One thing I really struggled with were the colours, I didn't realise the onions were so saturated. I decided to take a photo just so I could check my colours and I had just about everything right apart from the saturation. With more practice, hopefully my eyes will be able to see the colours more efficently.

Right here's the study and progress images. Hope you like.

Cheers, Matt.

Big Red - IFX Challenge

Hey again, I've just finished up with this image.

As soon as I saw this challenge I knew I wanted to do something like the "Legend of Cryptids" artwork that I'm a big fan of. Hopefully I've managed to something that marginly resembles a Cryptids card...

Feedback welcomed, cheers...

The Orc & Frozen

Not much more I can say really. Here are the first 2 of 25!

Hope you like em'

01 - Orc

02 - Frozen

Cheers, Matt.

Back on track, hopefully...

Well it's certainly been a while since I updated this blog... The worse thing is I don't really have that much to show.

I have recently had some design work which, used a lot of my time. Now however, I can focus more on some illustrations. I have once again concocted a list of images I have wanted to do for a while and todays second update is 2 of those images. I'm also going to share with you my list...

Last year I attempted to do this and failed because too many things got in the way and I coudn't meet my deadlines. This time I have no deadlines and I work on them whenever I can. This gives me much more time to work on these images and really learn something from them...

So here's my list...

01 - Orc
02 - Frozen
03 - Corpse
04 - Tree
05 - Giant Elemental
06 - Hovercraft
07 - Crash Site
08 - The Scout
09 - Temple
10 - War Beast
11 - Titan
12 - Weird & Wonderful
13 - Gunslinger
14 - Mech
15 - Fortress
16 - Release The Kraken!
17 - Werewolf
18 - Hunter
19 - The Mountains
20 - Nightwalker
21 - Cyclops
22 - Nissian Micra Space
23 - Elemental Dragon
24 - Dreamer & Nightmare
25 - Mr Leech

Well that's it, I hope to do these by the end of the year, but if I don't then it doesn't matter. Also one other thing, I dont think I'll be doing these in order this year because it didn't quite work last time... So I'll be just doing the ones I'm inspired to do at that time. Although it just so happens I've done the first 2...

Cheers, Matt.
